Description
First, and only, posthumous edition of this historical-political work by the antiquity scholar, playwright and historian Scipione Maffei (1675-1755). In 1736, upon returning from a long trip to Europe, between France, England, the Netherlands and Germany, Maffei wrote his "Suggestion for the perpetual preservation of the Republic of Venice through the present state of Italy and Europe" addressed to Venetian patricians and remained unpublished until our edition of 1797. On the basis of European examples, Maffei exposes the project of an aristocratic republicanism with an openness to the representativeness of the aristocracies of the mainland cities: the principle is that of "interesting everyone in government” through a constitutional reform of the government of the Venetian Republic, with a particular reference to the English system, seen as the closest to the ancient ideals of republican Rome. Published in the year of Campo Formio, our volume takes us back to those years of war in Italy and Europe also thanks to the two advertising pages of the Merceria di S.Salvatore near the Ponte dei Barettieri which offers for sale prints and cards with the scenarios and the protagonists of recent battles, placed as guard sheets
