This book was inspired by a lecture on the work of Gerhard Richter, in which the concept emerged of the 'first work' as the work in which the artist recognized himself for the first time. The curators found the idea of an artist looking at his or her method by way of the 'first work' intriguing, and wondered what other artists would choose as their number one. The submissions received for this book reveal the artists' ways of thinking from a new angle, and, together, form a remarkable document of the creative process.
